7. Describe symptoms and outcome (died, recovered, etc.).

The following was reported: A Rock Pigeon was found by a member of the public at x in x, PE on August 23, 2018. It was seen in a parking lot, unable to fly and in distress. It was submitted to Dr. x at the x, where it was found to be obtunded, having a body condition score of 3/5 and admitting weight of 0.24 kg. It was unable to hold its head up and had crusting around its beak. It was unable to move both wings, abrasion on left wing at patagial region, bruising and heat present. The pigeon was also unable to move its feet, withdrawal reflexes were ok, it was breathing fast and shallow. It was administered 10 ml SQ fluids and 0.1 mg/kg of meloxicam by IM injection. The pigeon died overnight in the x and was received by the x on the following day. The crop content of this pigeon contained 9.3 ug/g of Avitrol (bird control product) which confirms a state of avitrol toxicosis.

The following was reported: The active chemical in Avitrol, 4-Aminopyridine, is known to cause seizure and neurological deficits in birds and will cause sudden death if consumed in sufficient quantities. Birds found dead subsequent to consuming avitrol were found to have between 0.5 and 78 mg/kg of avitrol in their crop content. Reference: Frank et al. 1981.
