On July 26 a fire had broke out at Biedermann Packaging Inc. a dry goods pesticide facility in Dundas. Biedermann's is a co-packer of Spectrum Brands consumer rodenticides and some other dry goods. Biedermann Packaging Inc. has reported to us that some sku's of Spectrum Brands Products were consumed in the warehouse fire. All active ingredients registered to Spectrum Brands, that were reported to be in the fire, were in concentrations that were equal to those of the finished, registered consumer products. For example 16,200kg of two predator products sku's, contained 0.0025% AI or about 0.405Kg of difethialone. This equates to less than a pound of active in the total amount of finished product. It is unknown whether any of the water used to extinguish the fire was mixed with any of Spectrum's finished products. It is also unknown if any water containing any Spectrum Brands Product residue entered the storm water sewers. Biedermann Packaging Inc. is a certified chemical manufacturer and as a result of this certification the building is completely dyked to contain fire water. Echelon an environmental clean up company hired by Biedermann Packaging Inc., reported an estimate of 2000 fish have died as a result of fire water entering into Spencer creek. It is to our understanding that samples of the dead species of fish, that were collected, have been sent to the University of Guelph, by Echelon. Results have not come back. As of August 9, 2007 no report from the Fire Marshall has been released to the public indicating what caused this fire.
